What is URL encoding?

URL encoding (percent encoding) converts special characters into a format that can be safely transmitted in URLs. Characters like spaces, &, ?, and non-ASCII characters are converted to %XX format where XX is the hexadecimal value.

Why do URLs need encoding?

URLs can only contain certain characters from the ASCII set. Special characters, spaces, and international characters must be encoded to prevent breaking the URL structure and ensure proper transmission across different systems.
